Describing concept of "love"

Love. What comes to your mind when we talk about love? Sweet, candle, heart, hug, kiss and many more. But what about associating CHILI with love. Hmm... it was a tough one. But I managed to come out with a short poem describing the concept of love with chili. Here it goes...
Love like a chili,
Red, hot and spicy,
Makes you feel hot and wild,
and it's never too mild.

Juxtaposition exercise in class

Mr Radzi gave us 2 lists of words as below; firstly without numbered. Then we were asked to think of 3 2-digit numbers (between 01-99). Later, he gave us the same lists but this time they are numbered as followed:

1. Flower 0. Head
2. Lightning 1. Rain
3. Ice 2. Wood
4. Light 3. Tree
5. Fire 4. Spider
6. Duck 5. Root
7. Dog 6. Mountain
8. Oil 7. Wind
9. Leave 8. Rock
0. Fly 9. Water

This is how it works... For example, if I choose the number 20, then 2 is for the word in the 1st list which is Lightning and 0 is for the word in the 2nd list which is Head;and now when combined, that makes Lightning Head.

The 3 numbers that I chose was 05, 19 and 89. When the words were combined according from each list to the chosen numbers, they make Fly Root, Flower Water and Oil Water.

Part 1
The first exercise was to make sense of the words by making a sentence for each one. My sentences are as follow;

1. Fly Root - There is a fly resting on the mangrove root.
2. Flower Water - The pretty flower is thrown into the water.
3. Oil Water - Annie spills some oil on the water.

After that we have to illustrate our sentences.

Part 2
The second exercise was to combine the 2 words and make it into one. We were asked to illustrate the 3 new words to make them meaningful; Flyroot, Flowerwater, Oilwater... which was no doubt kind of tough and weird but interesting....

Juxtaposition

Juxtaposition is combining or placing 2 unrelated or contrast concepts or objects together; where familiarity turns into alien or the other way round. Juxtaposition is frequently used in creative works. It does help to make things look interesting and gives great impact to people most of the time. It gives fresh ideas, looks and also a different approach to things rather than normal and boring ways of giving information. If things were weird and different, it tends to grab people's attention very well, making them to look at it for a 2nd time!! That's what juxtaposition is for.

Logical mind map VS Associated mind map

The difference between logical mind map and associated mind map is that...

Logical mind map
- is not for problem solving as the information diverge, it is still within the scope.
- it is usually directly connected to stereotyping as it does not give a unique solution to your problems.
- interpretation of a given topic where students use them to write essays to avoid plagiarism.

Associated mind map
- helps to get ideas and get away from stereotyping.
- a guide to think out side of the box as it is to do with things that does not relate to the main subject.

Special note:
Something interesting happened in class last Friday (9/7/10). Mr Radzi helped us to check whether we are right brained or left brained. I found out that I am a left brained; the logical one. So, I'm thinking to myself, how can I survive in the creative world? hmmm....

Mortar and Pestle = Sambal belacan?

We were given an associated mind map on mortar and pestle; then we were asked to choose 5 words and figure out the new different usage of the devices according to the chosen words.

The 5 words that I chose were Marriage, Coconut, Medical, Beauty and Noise. So, below are the 5 new discoveries that I came out with.

At the end of the exercise, I found out that the best invention or idea has to be the most ridiculous, does not have to make sense and funny one. :)

Mind map

Mind mapping is a method people use to take notes and link words or ideas together. Eventually, it helps to get people to think and generate ideas divergently. Students usually do mind map to understand a topic better as it helps to connect multiple points to distinguish a better acceptance of a particular information of a topic. Not only students use mind map, working adults use them too; to organize information.

Mind mapping is divided into 2 types; Logical mind map and Associated mind map. Logical mind map usually has words directly related to the central subject. As for associated mind map, random words are generated which do not have connection with the central subject.

Here is a mind map of myself.

Doing this exercise made me recall that during my alpha year, I had to do some creative mind maps about myself. We were asked to think outside the box and personalized the mind map. Here are some photos to share. The paths are made out of words about myself accordingly.
